出家在俗孰为优？应审何处宜真修。
宗派难免应酬事，处尘无扰方免忧。

或问修行以出家或在俗为优，余意应细察何处适宜自己真实修行。出家后亦有忙于“法务”而无暇静修者。在俗而与世无争，庶几近乎远离烦恼。

Renounce or Stay Home　Yutang Lin

Which would be better, to renounce or stay home?
The main consideration is where one could do real practice.
Temples could hardly avoid all sorts of social functions;
Not feeling bothered in worldly life means free from worries.

Comment:

Someone asked which would be better for practice, to become a monk or to stay home? My idea is that it all depends on where one could do serious practice. Some people after joining some temple or school become very busy with so-called "Dharma activities" that they dont have time for practice in leisure. One who stays in the world and remains free from discord would be close to being far away from sorrows.
