Leisure in Dharma

Yutang Lin

"as a leisurely cloud, a wild crane"
"half a day in leisure stolen from this floating life"
From these old Chinese sayings, it seems that
Among complicated world of human existence
Leisure is extremely hard to get

Even for those who have time in leisure
Their minds are hardly free from worries to sustain tranquil leisure

Capable of living alone in deep wilderness
After all are deeds of only scarcely few
Vast openness in solitude and tranquility is a time
Could be wished for but difficult to attain

Devoting oneself into Dharma practices and services
Even though one is still amid worldly environments
And yet worldly entanglements and intrusions will gradually fade away
Although matters for praying come frequent and complicated
Not a trace of worldly considerations lingers and hinders in mind
Nor is there dualistic attitudes and intentions
And hence one abides naturally in tranquility

Wishing for leisure
No need to escape far away
Mind abiding in Dharma
Leisure and clarity will naturally arise
