The Essential Point to Attaining Full Enlightenment

Yutang Lin

In the boundless and division-less Dharmadhatu, one′s personal sphere of sorrows is simply a minute dot that is invisible. Hence, for a Dharma practitioner to attain full enlightenment, when viewed from the whole picture, in fact, on the whole the totality of all-in-oneness has always remained in the state of original purity, and we may even say that, there are only very tiny traces of ignorance as displayed by a boundless Buddha.

Therefore, the essential point to attaining full enlightenment is only to renounce the grasping that forms the sphere of sorrows.

Within the sphere of personal sorrows, it is very difficult to treat one′s habitual tendency of grasping to a ″self″ with the aim to becoming free from it, and, furthermore, it is possible to develop new grasping during the course of such treatments. Life is short for us humans, and there is no guarantee that we can continue to engage in Dharma practices in future lives, and hence, it is stated in the Sutras that, it takes three great asamkhyeya kalpas to attain full enlightenment. In other words, it is impossible for an ordinary person to attain enlightenment in this life.

However, the boundless Dharmadhatu, which we ordinarily are used to paying no attention whatsoever, has remained in the state of original purity due to our complete ignoring. If a Dharma practitioner could redirect personal attentions, so as no longer to swirling around within the tiny sphere of personal entanglements, but instead, to abide in the ever-flowing phenomena which is boundlessly open and impossible to grasp, and not to chase after whatever comes as situations change, then, it should be possible for the whole Dharmadhatu to resume original purity at any instant. Thus, not only attaining full enlightenment within one’s lifetime is possible, but also attaining instant awakening and instant realization can be hoped for.

May the indications presented in this essay bring about, not only encouragement to diligent engagement in devoting one′s life to Dharma practices, but also help to many Dharma practitioners for them to widely open their minds′ eyes and to attain full enlightenment soon!
